Do I Need a Skip Permit? Rules & Costs | Speedy Skips

So you’ve decided to hire a skip. Before booking, one of the first things you need to decide is where your skip will be placed. This will decide whether or not you are going to require a skip permit.

At Speedy Skips, we’ll guide you through the process, to help you understand everything you need to know, including whether you need one, how much they cost, and the process of applying for the permit.

When is a Permit Required?

There are a number of occasions when a skip permit is required:

  • Public Roads: If your skip is being placed in public streets, on a main or side road, or in a lay-by, you will require a permit, due to the nature of blocking traffic.
  • Public Verges: Placing a skip on a public verge will also require a permit, as this land is owned by the council.
  • Overhangs: if any part of your skip overhangs onto a public road or walkway, you will require a permit. However, it’s important to note that you’re not allowed to place a skip directly onto a pavement, as it blocks the public access. This could result in actions such as removal of the skip and fines (up to £1000), depending on the local authorities.

Skip Permits in your Local Area

Skip permit rules, costs and time limits can often vary, depending on your local council, as will requirements for reflective markings, traffic cones and night-time safety measures. It’s important to read up on the rules that are relevant in your areas.

In Gloucestershire, where Speedy Skips has been serving commercial skips for over 40 years, the average cost of a permit is £90, for a minimum period of 28 days, with an additional cost of around £27 for an additional 7 days.

Applications must be submitted at least 12 calendar days before the commercial skip is placed. Late or urgent applications could see an additional fee of £62.50, so make sure to submit your applications as soon as possible to avoid those extra charges.

Arranging your Permit

In most cases, the skip hire company is responsible for requesting the permit. The cost of the permit will normally be included in the overall skip hire. So ensure you tell the skip hire company as soon as possible if you will be requiring a skip permit!

In some areas across the country, such as Central London, the individual hiring the skip is required to apply for the permit, rather than the company renting out the skip. It’s always worth checking the rules of your local area, instead of making an assumption on who’s responsibility it is.

Permit FAQ’s

Do I apply for a skip permit myself?

Your skip provider will usually arrange the permit and may include the charge in their quote, or list it separately. In some areas, the person hiring the skip is required to apply for the permit, so make sure to check the rules for your area.

What happens if I don’t have a permit?

This depends on where the skip is placed. If it’s on private land, then you don’t require a permit and will be fine. However, if the skip is placed on a public road or public land, then you could face a large fine if you don’t have the required permit.

Can I put a skip on a pavement?

No, you cannot put a skip on a pavement at any time, as this blocks the public access and right of way.

How long does the permit last?

This will depend on your local area. In Gloucestershire, the minimum is a 28-day permit, with the option to add additional 7-day periods if required.
